How Does Shockwave Therapy™ Work?
Shockwave Therapy™ increases blood circulation and initiates metabolic activity, causing an inflammatory response that promotes and stimulates healing. This added circulation will promote tissue healing in the injured site and help in resolving the pain.
Shockwave is an acoustic wave that carries high amounts of energy to painful areas and myoskeletal tissues. It helps mend subacute, subchronic, and chronic conditions. The high energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons, and other soft tissues found in the body. Shockwaves are characterized by a jump in pressure. The kinetic energy of the projected stimulation, created by compressed air, first makes its way to a transmitter found at the end of the applicator in use and then into the tissue itself.
Shockwave helps to provide long-term pain relief over many affected areas. It has been known to address several conditions, including:

Is Shockwave Therapy™ Used Alone?
At Alta Vista Chiropractic & Massage Clinic, Shockwave Therapy™ is used as an adjunct modality. We use the shockwaves to further and solidify any progress that has already been made through other therapies. Shockwave can be used to intensify the results of chiropractic care and massage therapy as well as a majority of the other services we offer.
Slight discomfort may be felt during your session, depending on the level of pain you are already experiencing in the area of focus. This therapy lasts no longer than five minutes from beginning to end, however, so most patients can easily tolerate this minimal discomfort.
No, Shockwave Therapy™ does not involve injections of any nature. Instead, it relies on a handheld applicator that is gently applied to the problem area.
Frequency of care is determined by the severity of the injury at hand. Though, most people will see improvement after three months of care, it can take longer in chronic cases. Complete healing can take up to one year.
Please note that we do not use this technique by itself. We also employ several other health care methods that expedite the healing process.
Shockwave Therapy™ is an adjunct therapy that is included in your chiropractic care expenses. As we accept most major insurances for our chiropractic care services, this therapy is also likely to be covered by your insurance company.
